10 WAKEBOARD VOCABULARY WORDS TO KNOW!

I've recently received messages from several subscribers asking me to make a video on wakeboarding vocabulary. Oh yeah, think about subscribing to the channel, it hurts less than a front edge and I'll keep on throwing content at you. It's very motivating for me to see you subscribe and it makes me want to push my limits. So if you want us to cross my limits every week, subscribe 😉

It's true that we have our own vocabulary and for people who have been on the pontoons for a short time it's a bit difficult to follow the conversations.

  • "You see I arrive on the roof in heelside there I slam a big ollie I make a front 2 and bam frontboard I pass my palo and bam 2-7 again, I find myself in boardslide and the rewind 2 back and I finish in blind!"
  • Oh yeah! I also do a backflip
  • (Sound of crickets)

It's already complicated to understand each other in real life, so we're going to try to popularize this vocabulary so that everyone can understand each other.

We start with the basics quickly!

The Heelside & Toeside approaches

Heel in English means heel. This means that you will have a trajectory on your heels

Toes in English means toes and therefore you will have a trajectory on your toes

Front side and back side

Front side in English means front face so we will present our face first for the rotation

Back side means back face and so we will present our back first to the rotation

Now let's talk about module inputs

More complicated,  Here you will have to pay attention!

The simplest of all is 50-50. No, it's not "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" It's pronounced fifty-fifty.

Front board & Front Lip which means frontside boardslide and Frontside Lipslide.

Back board & Back Lip which means backside board slide and backside lipslide.

But what does it mean! In fact we'll make it simple:

If you arrive from the front and your front foot passes over the module first, we will talk about "front board".

If you arrive from the front and your back foot passes over the module first, we'll talk about a front lip!

Then it's the same thing with the back:

If you arrive and turn your back to the module to perform the rotation you will be in backside, if your front foot passes over the module we will talk about boardslide so back side board slide and if you pass your back foot over the module first you will be in back side lip slide!

Simple no?

Blind and wrapped

You know like the little wrap at Macdonal's? It's almost the same in wake.

Blind in English means blind. In wake we will call a blind exit when the rider will end up with his hand behind his back hanging on the rudder with the cable of the water ski lift behind his back. This means that he can't see the direction in which he has to go, hence Blind.

Wrapped is the reverse rotation. Wrapped means rolled up. So he will end up with his arm in the back hanging on the rudder but with the difference that he will be facing the cable of the water ski lift! It's a harder movement to do because our arm is more solicited.

Now the rotations

Already the rotations show abuse of language in all directions.

  • The 180° or the 1
  • The 270° or the 2
  • The 360° are also known as the 3-6 or the 3
  • The 450°, 4-5 or 4
  • The 540°, 5-4 or 5
  • etc...

We then mix a rotation with the direction of rotation. So a 5-4 back will be a 540 degree rotation where we turn our backs first and the rudder will go over our backs first too.

A 360° frontside is a rotation where you turn clockwise if you are goofy (right foot in front) and counter-clockwise if you are regular (left foot in front).

Where there! You're lost here!

Yeah, that won't change. Rotations for goofy :

  • Frontside clockwise
  • Backside counterclockwise

For regulars:

  • Frontside counterclockwise
  • Backside clockwise

Do you understand now?

Here is the basic vocabulary, I hope that you will be able to integrate yourself in the environment. If you can't, it's not a big deal, you're still a legendary animal and if you comment I'll still try to understand you.
