How to get a sponsorship?

First of all, what does sponsoring mean?

According to Larousse it means:

  • To finance a company, an event, a team, a sportsman, etc., in order to obtain publicity, an increase in notoriety.

So the first question to ask yourself is what additional notoriety can you bring to this company?

It is very clear that when you ask someone for money or materials, you have to give them something in return. It is therefore essential that your method of communication is already well established and reliable so that the company in question can rely on real figures.

Then what are the types of sponsorship?

And yes, there are also several types of contracts that you can obtain with a brand or company and I will list them from the simplest to the most complex to obtain. In other words, from the smallest to the biggest sponsorship.

1 - Sponsoring of notoriety

The sponsoring of notoriety is what is done the most in the world of sports. It is often an exchange that takes place in the form of an endowment for the athlete. The company and the athlete define a material budget and the athlete shows what he has obtained to a maximum of people.

To put it simply, the company gives you material and you make images with it.

This sponsorship is often obtained in the environment in which the athlete evolves. If you are a Wakeboarder it will be a Wake brand, if you are a BMX rider it will be a BMX brand.

2 - Image sponsorship

The image sponsorship is already more complex and more difficult to obtain because it is more restrictive for the athlete. However, with this one, you are no longer limited to staying in your field. You can look for sponsors other than brands of materials or equipment. It also allows you to get more.

The goal of the company is to associate its brand with your audience in order to convey this image to its audience. I'll do it again in a simpler way.
When you hear about Redbull today you think directly about extreme sports. So they have done their job correctly.
They managed to reach all the sponsored sports audiences and create their brand on the theme of "you drink redbull, you're a fat person". Bammm! All the people who want to send fat drink this energy drink.

3 - Credibility sponsorship

This sponsoring is often associated with a nice image contract ^^, I explain you why !

Credibility sponsorship is often achieved when you are a die-hard champion and the brand asks you to partner with them to show that they are doing things right or quality.

This kind of contract is worked out well in advance and you need to have a good career behind you. It is therefore important to work on your image if you want to be sponsored or to be helped in your career. Don't give up hope, it can happen faster than you think, but it is important to understand the stakes.

How do I put together a sponsorship file?

We will make it simple but complete! It must fit in a few pages with a beautiful presentation to show the company. It will be a question of making something attractive!

1- Presentation

  • Total pedigree:
    • name, age, profession (if not professional)
    • the prize list
    • your notoriety
    • press articles about you
    • your discipline
    • Who do you reach?
    • etc...

2 - Show your project.

It must be SMART! It's the 5 letters that help you remember to :

  • Specific: what action or project will you put into action
  • Measurable: What will be the indicator of the result
  • Achievable: what are the steps to take?
  • Realistic: What are the means implemented (money, material, time, etc...)
  • Temporal (how long do you think it will take to get there?)

3- Your budget!

Think of everything in figures:

  • transportation
  • hotels or accommodation
  • les frais d’inscriptions aux compétitions ou autres
  • insurance
  • miscellaneous supplies
  • le matériel audio-visuel si vous devez l’acheter.

Put in everything your project needs to be viable.
