Organising a christening in the Gironde: our tips for a perfect day
A christening is much more than a religious or civil ceremony: it is the first great family gathering around a child. Parents, grandparents, godparents, cousins — everyone is there, sometimes having travelled from far away. Organising this day therefore requires careful preparation, especially if you want everyone to feel welcomed, comfortable and happy to share this moment together. Here are our tips for a successful christening in the Gironde, from the venue to the meal and accommodation.
Choosing the right venue: the key to everything
The choice of venue determines everything else. For a christening, you need a place capable of welcoming close and extended family, serving a meal, and — ideally — accommodating guests who have come from afar. Classic restaurant rooms have the advantage of convenience, but they impose their own schedules, set menus and prices.
An increasingly popular alternative: hiring an entire estate exclusively. You are at home, you choose the caterer (or cook yourselves), you set the pace of the day. In the Gironde, this option is accessible less than an hour from Bordeaux. Our dedicated group stays page explains in detail how we welcome families for this type of event.
How many guests and where to house them?
The question of accommodation is often underestimated when planning a christening. Yet it changes everything: when guests sleep on site, the day can extend naturally, nobody is watching their glass because of the drive home, and the following morning becomes a precious bonus for extended time together.
At Domaine du Dahu in Sablons, the entire estate is exclusively hired out for groups and can accommodate:
- Up to 18 people in double sleeping arrangements
- 5 floating chalets on the lake, one exterior chalet with kitchenette, and a 170 m² charming gîte
- Bed linen and towels provided
- A private 3-hectare lake with no overlooking neighbours — complete privacy for your family
For groups below 18 people, the arrangement remains very flexible. For larger families, do get in touch — we study each request on a case-by-case basis.
Organising the meal: caterer or home cooking?
The christening meal is often the most eagerly anticipated moment. Two main options are open to you: hiring a professional caterer or opting for a home-cooked meal prepared by the family.
With us, you are completely free to choose. The estate has fully equipped kitchens — worktops, ovens, refrigerators, crockery — allowing your family to cook on site if they wish. You can also bring in the caterer of your choice: we do not impose anyone. This total freedom allows you to keep control of the budget and personalise the menu to suit your family's tastes and wishes.
For the meal service, the bright 75 m² room and the covered terrace overlooking the lake can accommodate your group for the meal and speeches. In summer, the terrace becomes the ideal space for aperitifs and dessert under the stars.
Decoration: personalise the space as you wish
One of the great advantages of an exclusively hired venue is the freedom to decorate as you please. No constraints from the venue, no imposed decor. You can set up:
- Fairy lights around the terrace
- Balloons and a personalised dessert table
- A photo corner with themed props
- A cake and treats table for the children
The natural setting of the estate — the lake, the trees, the wooden chalets — already does much of the work. Even minimal decoration looks beautiful in this context.
The ideal schedule for a successful christening day
Here is an example programme that works well for a christening on an exclusively hired estate:
- Morning: guests arrive gradually, settle in, first stroll around the lake
- Midday: ceremony (religious or civil), then return to the estate for aperitifs on the terrace
- Afternoon: meal, speeches, cake and desserts
- Evening: free continuation — soft music, games for the children, a walk by the lake
- The following morning: breakfast prepared together in the equipped kitchen, final photos, a relaxed farewell
With accommodation on site, you are no longer constrained by a closing time. The day can end at your own pace, in complete serenity.
Which season to choose for a christening in the Gironde?
The Gironde enjoys a mild and sunny climate for much of the year. For an outdoor or semi-outdoor christening, the months of May to September offer the best conditions. Spring is particularly beautiful on the estate: the hoopoe makes its appearance, the vegetation is fresh, and temperatures are pleasant without being overwhelming.
In winter, the estate remains available and the gîte with its wood-burning stove is particularly warm and welcoming. For an indoor reception with a smaller group, some families appreciate its cosy, intimate atmosphere.
